A
window valance is a relatively simple way to dress
up a window and add style to a room. By definition, a window
valance is a type of topper to a window. It does not cover
the entire window like a curtain or drape might, but adds
a framing feature. There are several styles of window valance
that can be used in with any type of décor. Valances
can be as long as one-third of the window’s
height and still create visual balance. Anything
longer than that would obstruct views and look unbalanced.
If you want to use more fabric and have a deeper valance,
you can hang it above the window high enough to not
cover as much of the glass.
Save Money with Discount Valances
Inexpensive valances can be found just about any place
home items are sold. Because they do not require a lot
of fabric the cost is kept relatively low.
Some of the lower cost types of valances are balloon valances
that are gathered and puffy and straight, pleated valances.
These can even be made from bed sheets and fabric remnants
to save even more money.
Window Valance Ideas
The
styles of custom
window valances are not limited to those
two types, though those are most common at discount outlets.
There are also valances with pleated jabots, or fabric
strips that hang down the side of the window that can
be made of a variety of fabrics.
The nice thing about making a valance with a jabot is
that it comes in three different parts. The centre piece
and then two side pieces. This makes it easier to adjust
for different width windows. The centre piece can be lengthened
for wider windows. That is especially nice if you want
to take your window treatments with you if you move around
or are just renting a home.
Another
type of valance is the cornice valance. This is a hard
piece of plywood or foam core that is padded and then
covered with fabric. To add dimension to a window treatment,
coordinating drapery can be hung from
a curtain rod under
the window valance.
