Valance styles
are many and choosing the right valances for your window
treatments can really make the difference between an amateur
job and that with a truly professional appearance. Select
one of many valance styles to be sure your window treatments
have the perfect finishing touches.
Different styles of curtains in home decorating
There
are many different curtain
and drapery styles that lend
themselves to topping off with a valance. Pricilla curtains
often are topped with valances as well as café curtains.
Draperies that hang from a simple curtain pole will
look more elegant and formal if accompanied by a valance.
The type of valance placed on top of the window treatment
and the kinds of curtain hardware used can give a
finished and profession look to the entire window.
Some Popular Valance Styles
Some
of the most popular valance styles are also the easiest
to make or hang if store bought. There is the basic
gathered valance with a pocket on top where the curtain
pole can run through it. It looks best
over cafe curtains and Priscilla curtains.
The balloon valance also looks great by itself or
over draperies and simple curtains tied back with
curtain hardware.
A pleated valance has a more formal and crisp look. This
type of valance looks best over long formal drapes of a
heavy weight fabric. The material used for the pleated
valance should also be heavy weight. This will help it
keep its pleat as it hangs. If the fabric is too light,
it can also be lined or starched to keep its shape.
Any style of valance can be hung by the homeowner with
the right tools and curtain hardware. A pole is needed
for the balloon or gathered valance. This can be pressure
mounted with no screws needed for an inside mount window.
Brackets come with the pole to hang on the outside area
of the window.
A pleated
valance works with a pole, but also looks good with 1” x 4” board
on which the valance can be stapled or hot glued, or
attached with hooks for easy removal and cleaning. This
also helps keep the pleats in place with this very popular
choice of valance styles.
