Using lined curtains

Lined curtains for windows

Lined curtains do more than just add weight and substance to window coverings. Lined curtains can also insulate windows and give a clean, finished look from the outside that is as appealing to look at from that view as from inside the room.

Lined Curtain Fabrics

In general, curtain fabric by itself usually needs something more to make a finished window treatment. This is because many fabrics with prints and patterns, even the thicker cottons for example, still show the design on the reverse side of the material. If there were different fabrics used for different rooms in your home then the view from the outside would be messy and take away from the appearance of the exterior of your home.

To fix the problem of having too many colours bleed through the fabric, lined curtains are the solution. Specific fabrics for lining draperies or curtains can be purchased where finer decorator fabrics are sold. Also, the top interior decorators will naturally line all window treatments for a completely professional finish.

Lined draperies and curtains are not only for the exterior view, but add weight to fabrics and allow for crisp pleats and folds to hold their shape. While most often lined curtains are backed in an ivory or white curtains lining material, this does not always need to be the case. Many window treatments and fabrics lend themselves nicely to being lined with a contrasting or complimentary fabric. This works especially nicely with pleated valances or lined draperies that will be drawn back to reveal the underside of the panel.

Sewing Lined Draperies

Making your own lined draperies is not a task for the beginner. It can be difficult to measure, cut and hem the lining to hang right in connection with the curtain panel. There are a couple of tips however to make it a little easier. One is to cut both fabrics for the window coverings together. Then when the edges are stitched, you will have a perfect match. Each piece should be hemmed at the bottom separately to avoid bunching up of the lining fabric in your lined curtains.
