Custom window
valances are the perfect solution to unusual size windows
or for matching window treatments to other elements in the
room. You can create custom window valances with some basic
sewing skills and tips from the professionals.
Custom Curtains
If you have found the ideal duvet cover for your bedroom,
but there are not any matching window treatments that fit
your windows, you can make your
own custom curtains. You
can purchase a bed sheet, extra pillow shams or other coordinating
linens sold for that duvet cover. Then use the fabric to
create your own custom window valances or curtains. With
a decorative curtain pole, you will have a completely designer
look.
Hanging Custom Valances
Professional
decorators have a lot of tricks up their sleeves when
it comes to hanging custom valances and custom curtains.
Many will use staple guns and hot glue in place of screws
and nails. This works the fastest and is the most effective
in hanging cornices and other valances that use a 1” x 4” board
to support the valance and make it stand away from the
wall. L-brackets are the best way to hang a valance using
a board. It attaches to the board and to the wall at
a perfect right angle.
Part of the look of custom curtains or valances is in
the curtain pole. Decorative poles and rods can make the
difference between plain and average looking window coverings
and something really spectacular. If you already have many
different wood tone in pieces of furniture in the room,
then a black iron or wooden
curtain pole it a nice finishing
touch. Whatever style you choose it should be proportional
to the weight of the fabric and window treatment as a whole.
A final
designer tip when creating window
valances or curtains is to make sure patterns match. This
may mean you need to purchase a little extra fabric when
working with a pattern like a floral or plaid, but a
tell tale sign that it was made by an amateur is when
the patterns don’t line up on your custom window
valances.
